Westward Movement & Trip to Autry Museum-Update

This past Friday we were fortunate enough to have a teacher from the Autry Museum come to our classroom to do a presentation. You guys and gals had the opportunity to work in teams to figure out which route you took on "your" way west. You had to use the clues provided to make your choice. You also got the opportunity to touch some artifacts that you may have used on your route. You learned quite a bunch that will be useful for our trip this week and it was a lot of fun!

Thanks to the Autry's Museum All Aboard Bus Program we were able to obtain a free bus to go to the Autry. They have some fabulous artifacts that tell the story of the Westward Expansion and California. Remember to use your free family voucher to go as often as you want with your whole family.

As Unique as Snowflakes

This Friday we made snowflakes that were both beautiful and some that were edible. We began by following some basic folding and shape patterns for our paper snowflake...more difficult than it looks. After you guys and gals were all on your own. It was interesting to see that even though some of you became frustrated, you figured out what you were doing incorrectly by doing it again and again, and by asking each other for assistance. YAY! I love to see teamwork. I have included a picture of the ingredients and materials used so that you can do this yummy recipe again at home. Have fun!

100th Day of School!

Our 100th Day of School  was Unbelievable!  I AM SOooooooooooo VERY PROUD of you all and all the learning you have done. I am amazed at how far you have come since our first adventure in first grade. You guys and gals blow me away at the thinking and creativity you exhibit every day.

We started the day wearing our awesome shirts!

Your projects rocked!

We then some math activities with cards and cups. The cards were a challenge-BUT challenges are good.

Then we had our 100-Second Obstacle Course...WOW! There is a lot we can do in 100 seconds.

I really loved, was inspired, and touched by your responses on our 1-0-0-Digits. I really hope that you get to go to all your destinations, find answers to your questions, and much, much more.

The most delicious part was making our Zero the Hero Donuts-talk about yummy, yummy in our tummies.

Here's to many more 100 Days of Learning!

Winter Fun!

I really love Winter. It includes many celebrations and holidays like Christmas and Valentine's Day. I was thinking of a way that we could do MORE art activities and cookery. They make learning so much fun! I have therefore decided to make every Friday our ART/Cookery Day as a way to enhance and further develop our writing abilities.

Our first activity--Hot Chocolate--was LOTS of fun and yummy, yummy, delicious. Your art cups came out beautifully, and your functional writing on giving instructions on how to make hot chocolate is right on target.

We then made snowmen kabobs and those were very tasty as well.

Water Cycle

Here is a video on the Water Cycle to help you review the academic vocabulary, and to develop deeper conceptual understanding of what occurs in the cycle. Enjoy!

Penguin T-shirts

Our penguin-winter shirts came out so cute! I think I even want a penguin surfing too. I can't wait to have our 100th Day and our Valentine T-shirts. I know we didn't make a pencil for the winter, but we will be making some pencil for the other shirts.

A New Year Begins

Happy New Year! I hope you have had time to rest, relax, and review some work. I have been reading for enjoyment (Yay!), cleaning (blah!), going on little excursions, spending lots of time with my kids, and listening to Melanie talking up a storm. She still chops off parts of many words, but I understand her. She also loves to dance and tries to sing along to her favorite tunes (Call My Maybe).

I can't wait to see and your projects tomorrow. The new year is finally here and there is so much still to do before you head on off on your new adventure to middle school and beyond...boohoohoo. The school year is flying by and I can't wait to get started on so many new activities and learning. Therefore, put on your seat belts, buckle up, and get ready for another awesome adventure.

We all need to look at our strengths and weaknesses (YES, we all have them), and make a resolution on how to make ourselves "better" individuals. This can be improving an area of learning, being more caring, more giving, more compassionate, more forgiving...This year my resolution is to be a better listener. What is your resolution?

Here is a cute collage I made of you guys back in September. I find it is a perfect opportunity to remind you of your dreams, goals, and aspirations.

See you all tomorrow!
