Digestive System

You have been doing a great job learning about science. I hope you are learning a lot as well as having fun doing the projects in class. We will be doing more projects in future lessons and we will definitely be experts by the time we are done. Here a few pictures of what we have been up to:

Here you looking into each others mouth to observe what happens to food as soon as it enters the mouth.

Here we are trying to get the bolus down the esophagus without touching the bolus or any funny shaking.

We will be doing more projects and some experiments as we continue in our journey of the digestive system. so get ready and buckle up, Academic Airlines is about to depart.

Amazing Fieldtrip

Our trip to the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Villa was truly breath-taking. This was my first time at this museum. The trip there was slow due to the horrendous traffic on the west 10 Freeway. It took us over an hour to get there. Once we were on Highway 1, the Santa Monica Beach scenery engulfed us with its shimmering waves and sea-salt air. When we finally arrived, we were at the base of the mountain and had to travel the route up the hill. The stone road, the gardens, trees, and fountains leading to the top left us all in awe. We entered the grand hallway and immediately set out to see as much as possible. The artwork, artifacts, and statues made of marble and other stones were unbelievably beautiful. We saw the magnificence of Zeus, Herkales/Hercules, and a huge lion attacking a horse. We were truly lucky to have the opportunity to observe such artwork. Thanks to the Getty for sponsoring our buses.

The Human Heart

We been learning so much about the heart, it's function, and its importance. I found this great short video that explains the heart. Enjoy!

The Human Heart - Explania

Here is a closer look at "making" blood.

Here are some entries they have in their Science Journal.

CST and "Making" Blood

The school year is off to a great start. Yesterday, I found out your scores and I am still grinning from ear to ear (show not tell). Some of you scored a PERFECT 600! WOW! WOW! WOW! Is all I can say. I am sooooooooooo proud of you guys and gals. I know it took a lot of hard work throughout the year(s), but it sure has been worth it. There is no limit to what you guys and gals can accomplish when you set your mind to it. Just like Grandpa would always tell Willy: "You can do anything you set your mind to." And guess what? I truly believe that. I even had a dream last night in which you were all up on a fancy stage, with a full house, being recognized and awarded some of the highest honors like Nobel prizes in science,  literature, math, medicine...what a beautiful dream.

No on to today's lesson. It was so much fun watching you "make" your blood. Your schema about blood has expanded in leaps and bounds...yippee! I also know(meta-cognition) that you enjoyed eating all the extra jelly beans. I plan to have lots more projects for you all that will help you expand your schema even more.:)

1st Day of 5th Grade!

I am very happy to be in 5th grade with all of you. It is going to be a challenging and very FUN year! I am very impressed with the PowerPoints we have seen so far. You guys and gals sure did a lot this summer. Remember to bring your cameras throughout the year to take pictures of what we are doing, your friends, etc. This way you have a great collection at the end of the year for your memory book/PowerPoint.

Today we did a couple of activities. Take a look and enjoy.
